Mwana Africa’s primary contribution to the often remote areas in which it operates is the stimulation of economic activity through the creation of jobs, the use of local contractors, the purchase of goods and services from nearby suppliers, and the development of local and regional infrastructure. As a result, the group’s impact extends well beyond its direct employees and into the communities where it operates. In Zimbabwe it has been estimated that, for every employee, as many as ten others derive benefit from BNC’s operation; a total of more than 30,000 people.
The main thrust of Mwana Africa’s social initiatives continues to be education. BNC provides on-site primary school education, funds secondary schooling, and grants a number of scholarships to higher education institutions for employees’ children. This operation has also established the Chairman’s Fund as a vehicle through which to channel its social and community development activities.
